She earned Bachelors Degrees in both Interior Design and Art Studio from Sacramento State University. email=melanie@carverschicketanz.com

        Kumaresh Sekaran, Architect

After graduating with a degree in architecture in 1992, he worked in an award-winning firm in India until 1996. Feeding his wanderlust, he explored S.E. Asia and ended up working in Singapore for 2 years on various projects throughout Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, and even China. While his passion is exploring the nooks and crannies of the world's many different ethnic cultures, the scent of ocean and wilderness has drawn him to Carmel. email=kumaresh@carverschicketanz.com

        Jason Aumick, Interior Design Assistant

The newest addition to our Interior Design team, Jason comes from the scenic gorges and rustic trails of the Finger Lakes. This upstate-bred New Yorker descends upon the Central Coast in search of new beauty and opportunities. With a Masters’ Degree in African American History, three years of classroom teaching experience and ten years of service in fine dining, Jason has developed a passion for the diversity of life. His eclectic taste in both art and music spans from the chaos of Pollock to the serenity of Klimt, from the rhythms of Motown to Mozart; as long as they have soul. Free time is spent enjoying the fruits of life, whether that is with family, friends, food, wine or jumping out of airplanes; but most important is the time spent with his wife, Chenoa. email=jaumick@carverschicketanz.com

        Carissa Duncan, Interior Designer

A California native, Carissa recently earned her BFA in Interior Architecture and Design from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.         Barb Simmons, Bookkeeper

Barb received her BA in Business Economics from UCSB and has been a bookkeeper for more than 15 years. She enjoys the challenge and flexibility of her work. She also enjoys creating wonderful stained-glass windows and silk paintings. Her other passion is riding her dappled-grey Arabian Horse. email=barb@carverschicketanz.com

        David Dunnigan, Architectural Job Captain

A graduate of Cal Poly, SLO, David grew up in Santa Cruz and was excited to find C+S, giving him the opportunity to pursue his architectural license while be able to stay on the Central Coast. While not at work at he tries to keep pace with his ever growing library, participates in the occasional design competition and enjoys spending time in the darkroom (still a believer in film) and always up for a live hockey game. In trying to keep life in perspective, he feels that any day that one gets to the beach is a day well spent. His biggest goal is to complete his "not-as-easy-as-he-thought" coffee table by the end of the year...we'll let you know how it turns out. email=ddunnigan@carverschicketanz.com

        Diane Singer, Office Manager

A Monterey Bay native who has been living in San Francisco for the past decade, Diane gained valuable experience working for internet and fashion design companies and a sustainable fish brokerage.  She studied photography at both Monterey Peninsula College and the Academy of Art in San Francisco.  After years of city living, she has returned to enjoy the quality of life the Monterey Peninsula offers.  Diane takes pleasure in photography, independent films, hiking, horse back riding, making ceramics and gourmet cooking and dining.  Her favorite times are spent with family and friends.

        Laura Nicola, Assistant Office Manager

Born and raised in Monterey, Laura recently graduated from Middlebury College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology.  Although she enjoyed her time in beautiful New England, she is happy to call the Central Coast her home once again.  Before joining C+S, Laura gained valuable experience working in the field of admissions for private, educational institutions in the Monterey area.  Her skills in event planning, data maintenance and staff management will be put to good use at C+S.  In her free time, Laura enjoys exploring Big Sur, spending time with her family and friends, and hanging out with her cat, Nolan.  Laura is an avid snowboarder and a huge fan of the San Jose Sharks.  She also loves scary movies, cooking, and reading.

        San Francisco Office

C+S has established a satellite office in San Francisco to be closer and more available to our metropolitan clientele.  We look forward to spending more time in our favorite American city!

        Wildcat Hill

Rob and Mary Ann and friends recently visited the historical home of Edward Weston, considered by some to be the most influential American photographer of the twentieth century. Located in the beautiful Carmel Highlands, this 800 sq. ft.  “little gray home in the West" (Weston, Edward) was built in 1938 and still remains in its original form.

        Jay and Barb Celebrate

On January 2, 2009, Jay Auburn and Barbara Simmons celebrated their 8th year at Carver + Schicketanz.  The office also took the opportunity to celebrate Jay’s birthday.  We appreciate Jay and Barb’s hard work and dedication.  This office would not be the same without them!  In honor of this momentous occasion, both will be enjoying relaxing weekends in Squaw Valley.

        Design San Francisco

Once again, our interior design team headed up to the city for “Design San Francisco,” the annual conference for design professionals (formerly known as the Winter Market).  This year, photographs of our work were showcased on the main floor.  In addition, Mary Ann Schicketanz joined members of Mayor Newsom’s Green Task Force on a panel which discussed the future of sustainable building: “Green and Bold: Creating a Vision of the Future for the Bay Area.”  This event was sponsored by IAP (International Art Properties) and the San Francisco Design Center, and was fun and informative for all! For more information about the event, please see the following link: http://www.sfdesigncenter.com/events/events.html

        Christmas 2008

With live music and delicious food, the C+S community shared in another successful holiday celebration. With over 150 people in attendance, it was not a party to be missed!

  1. Our Work

        Commercial

Our quest is to make everyone's place of business more soothing to their body and mind. With a focus on day-lighting, comfortable color schemes and textures, as well as careful attention to ergonomics, acoustics and air quality, we create healthy and inspiring environments for productive thinking and work.

        Investment Banking Firm

20,000 SF of the 32nd floor of a highrise were gutted to the core to make room for the new offices of a Texas investment banking firm. We were tasked with creating a comfortable, transparent working environment which facilitates a balance between private and open spaces and fosters good communication. In addition, the company needed a welcoming lobby area and more formal public conference rooms. We chose multiple layers of clear and frosted glass to separate functions and still bring daylight to the core of the building. Access to conference rooms on the perimeter of the building is curvilinear to avoid long hallways.

        Community Center

Reflecting the ancient architectural Round Houses of this California Indian tribe, their new school and community center in Auburn, California will be the focal point for education and tribal events.

        Law Offices

The interiors for this Sacramento-based law firm were developed to complement the stark industrial architecture, and at the same time provide a comfortable and highly functional environment for our clients and theirs.

        Gallery & Theatre

Carver + Schicketanz Architects donated all design services for the renovation, which was hailed by all as a tremendous improvement in terms of both natural and artificial lighting, circulation, flow, and display space.

        Sena Reider Offices

A boutique advertising firm near Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey wanted an off-beat look to match their "out of the box" creative thinking.

        Residential

Architecture is our way of life. We seek beauty and serenity through natural elegance. Our work can be modest and noble, unforced and easy, achieved through a classic simplicity. Our goal is seamless divisions between architecture, interior design, and landscape. We particularly enjoy being architects and interior designers for creators and collectors of art and sculpture. Having worked with the same talented craftsmen for decades, we can create just about anything we dream up with our clients.

        Sena Residence

Nestled into a Ridge high above Carmel Bay, this home features tremendous expanses of glass to frame the aerial views of the peninsula as it meets the ocean.

        Bennett

Winding around a cove on the Carmel Highlands, this house was designed to take advantage of the dramatic views. Three major building blocks are connected with "joints" to provide flexibility and dynamism.

        Treadwell

A gently sloping grassy ridge extends onto the roof of this modest Big Sur home. The structure sits lightly on a large stone patio cut into the hillside, and presents a spectacular view of the coast meeting the Pacific.

        Viking’s Roost

Situated in Carmel Highlands, the addition at Viking's Roost connects two historic buildings on site, the most unique being a 1918 structure modeled after a medieval Norwegian hunting lodge. The design of the addition was driven by the use of new materials with old techniques. The first floor of the addition is the physical and social center of the house - the kitchen. The second floor has a master bedroom suite. All three buildings enclose on a large patio which offers stunning views of the Pacific.

        Murphy

To maximize the Carmel Beach views and minimize the footprint on a small site, we constructed three stories - all of which are "ground floors" due to the way we re-contoured the sloping land. Stainless steel columns. Glass stair enclosure. Interior by Dale Stryker.

        Leslie

This modern house with stunning views is tucked into the edge of the Big Sur coast. Comfortable for two people, yet able to accommodate three visiting children and their families in the downstairs guest quarters. The curved walls, radial structure, staggered rooms, and stepped roof reflect the power of the site.

        Taylor

Situated in the redwoods of Big Sur, we created this 2-bedroom copper and steel home by fashioning a 2-story core from which each room cantilevers between the trees and over a creek.

        Heymann

Anchored on a ridge at the top of the Carmel Highlands, we designed this home to showcase a museum-quality art collection. The shape of the house echoes the shape of the land, its massive battered walls supporting a lightweight, soaring metal roof.

        Sarin

Located on the Big Sur coast, this 4-bedroom home is organized around a central core of skylights while the simple layout reflects the sweeping nature of the site. Slate floors. Peeled log-pole columns. Re-sawn interior doors.

        Berolzheimer

Originally a ranch-style house on the water in Pebble Beach, we reorganized the floor plan and turned the attached garage into a guest wing. A pond separates the entry area from the guest and master suites. Imported Laotian pine floors and Japanese veneered panels.

        Weiner Residence

This 2 story cabin located in Coastlands, Big Sur is set on a hillside above the Pacific Ocean. The South Coast is viewed from decking, bedroom and the common living areas and Asian art pieces are integrated into the interiors and the natural wood structure.

        Big Sur Guest Quarters

Bordering on the southern edge of Garrapata Creek as it flows into the Pacific, this guest quarters with multi-purpose room is built with stone retaining walls and a planted roof to blend with the existing residence, surrounding landscape and rugged Big Sur coastline.

        Rothmann

Located on a steep hillside in Mill Valley, we placed the base of this house in the direction of the slope while cantilevering and orienting the second floor towards the view of the bay. Redwood siding. Steel doors and copper fascias.

        Interiors

In our designs, the transition from architecture to interiors and furnishings must be as smooth as our transition from nature to the built environment/architecture. Our interiors are modern, warm, comfortable, and site specific. Color schemes and textures derived from natural surroundings flow throughout.

        Carmel Hotel Suite

Nestled in downtown Carmel by the Sea, this charming hotel suite boasts a warm and relaxing color palette and casual California style. The furnishings focus on natural materials, such as carved wooden side tables and hand woven rope headboards.

        Upper Weiss

Originally built by Kipp Stewart, this Big Sur cabin was home to Philip Johnson and David Whitney for over a decade. Whitney and Johnson transformed the country cabin into a showcase backdrop for their world class art collection. In 2006, the home was donated to the Big Sur Land Trust by Mr. Whitney's estate and sold with the stipulation that the proceeds benefit of the Big Sur Community. It was a joy to restore this cabin with its rich history as well as its spectacular landscape and make it a comfortable home for the new owners. We mixed found mid century pieces with simple designs by Californian furniture makers. The fabrics are warm and simple to compliment the clients' relaxed lifestyle.

        Loft 390

A refurbished historical building and great views of downtown Sacramento provided the inspiration for the interior design of this loft space. Rothko inspired wall treatments provide a perfect backdrop for some of our custom furniture and a collection of American Indian artifacts.

        Bayview

With two small children, our clients wanted a refurbished oceanfront home that was as practical as it was comfortable. So we crafted all new interior finishes and built-ins. The curtains, bedspreads, and pillows were made locally.

        Pfeiffer Ridge Residence

The unique sharp angles of this floor plan made this Big Sur residence a challenge to remodel and furnish. The contemporary interior is the perfect blend of modern and rustic elements, providing a warm inviting feel while staying true to the original style of the house.

        Halcyon

We retained all the clean lines of this Carmel oceanfront house when we refurbished the kitchen, bathrooms, and interior wood paneling. Slick stainless steel counters play off the warm pear-wood cabinetry.

        Dickstein English Big Sur

Painted masks and ancient figurines gaze at the ocean below. Rough hewn teak members, slate floors and a stone hearth compliment the owners' collection of Aboriginal art and Indonesian artifacts. Textures play off each other from the smooth surfaces of the custom wood sofas and bronze vessel sinks to the Kuba cloth and gold and rust weaves throughout.

        Loft 380

This small L shaped loft on a busy street corner in Sacramento was divided into living, dining and sleeping spaces by designing "two sided" custom furniture pieces. The amorphous island is kitchen counter on one side, bar on the other and dining on the third side - two thirds of the sofa faces the "living room." The remaining third faces the "bar/dining area". Curvilinear shapes promote fluid transitions.

        Gushman

This 1970's pole house is set on a mountain ridge amongst wonderful tropical vegetation with spectacular views to Honolulu. The new interiors strive to lighten the existing spaces with soft grey stone, pastel lacquer and light linen fabrics while respecting the original palette of redwood and koa.

        Dickstein English Sacramento

Jubilant, energetic color and lively pattern fill the shared gathering spaces of this Sacramento home, while the master bedroom retreats into cooler, quieter tones.

        Piedmont

A classic formal home, we refurbished this historic residence in Piedmont for a family who wanted "a breath of fresh air." We introduced contemporary furniture, lively colors, white linen curtains, and stainless steel hardware.

        Martin

We chose soft, warm and fuzzy fabrics and the sensuous tones and clean lines of natural cherry wood to achieve a comfortable interior compatible with its frequently foggy historic environment.

        Pambianco

Located in Saratoga, we refurbished this historic house to frame the owner's stunning art collection. Opening the kitchen to the dining area, we added mahogany cabinets and a stainless steel island.

        Leslie

To optimize the ocean views, we designed large glass surfaces and a strong yet warm color scheme - inspired by the vibrant reds and greens of the iceplant that covers the Big Sur bluffs. We added texture with combed wall and ceiling finishes.

        Historic Preservation

Serving as the restoration architects on projects such as the Pt. Sur Lighthouse has provided us with the opportunity to understand turn-of-the-century building methods and how modern techniques can aid in their preservation.

        Miller Lyen, Pacific Grove

On a quiet street in Pacific Grove sits this historic residence, waiting to receive an addition rooted in history but distinct from the existing house.

        Bain Residence

We replaced a 1970's ranch-style add-on with a 2,000 square foot addition that respects the original 1928 adobe - from its wood floors, tiles, and wrought ironwork to its tall doors and steel-framed windows.

        Point Sur Lighthouse

Working with the State of California and the U.S. Coast Guard, we engaged in extensive research in order to choose the correct methods and materials for restoring the most historically significant site on the Big Sur coast.

        Willey Residence

We worked diligently to put this residence on Carmel's historic registry for the purpose of keeping the home's charm and integrity while upgrading its amenities. We doubled the size of this 1925 cottage by adding on the back. From the street, the home looks the same as it did before the remodel.

        Hallman Residence

We thoughtfully modified, thoroughly refurbished, and carefully refinished this classic 1929 Monterey adobe-style 3-story house on Carmel Beach.

        Martin Residence

Adhering to the scale and whimsy of homes in the historic district of Pacific Grove, we developed three building blocks with different but compatible exterior materials for this long and narrow site.

        Land Use Planning

C+S has been deeply involved in local land use planning since participating in the original drafting of the Big Sur Land Use Plan. For the past 22 years, we have successfully aided over 100 property owners in planning issues ranging from feasibility studies for large acreage ranches to coastal permits for ocean-front homes.

        On The Boards

New projects are exciting. We are fortunate enough to have a variety of exciting projects in the design stage. From mountain-top retreats to earth-bermed studios and city apartments, each new client brings the challenge of interpreting varied programs and combining their needs with unique sites.

        Carmel Sands

Our contribution to the revitalization of Carmel will be this new boutique hotel on the site of the 50's style "Carmel Sands Lodge" property. Fully half a block in downtown Carmel with underground parking and a fabulously fresh spa, surrounded by world-class restaurants and shopping.

        Murphy

We love nothing better than a return client. Several years ago we designed a beach house for a family in Carmel. We are now designing an Earth friendly family retreat for these same clients on 40 acres with an unsurpassed aerial view sweeping from Point Lobos to Santa Cruz and beyond.

        Ashton

This earth sheltered, sod roofed new home in Carmel Valley will have an articulated floor plan with joints to hug the shape of the hillside. Bowen A 900 S.F. second story addition. This Carmel house will be reconfigured to expand the living room and master areas. Existing siding will be replaced with Cedar board and batten giving this rustic dwelling a fresh look in the Carmel tradition.

        Bowen

A 900 S.F. second story addition. This Carmel house will be reconfigured to expand the living room and master areas. Existing siding will be replaced with Cedar board and a batten giving this rustic dwelling a fresh look in the Carmel tradition.

        Gaspich

A charming cottage to be refurbished for a couple of empty nesters. By adding a second floor with master suite and marble clad bath and by enlarging the kitchen to incorporate updated appliances and additional storage, the house will provide modern comforts without sacrificing character or privacy.

        Stone House

Perched above the Big Sur coastline sits the Stone House, a historic landmark designed by renown California architect William Wurster. Carver+Schicketanz has designed a strong yet simple glass addition which unites Wurster's Stone House with our new remodel of guest quarters and swimming pool originally designed by William Turnbull and Will Shaw.

        Ridge Top Family Compound

A pair of serpentine stone walls guide this house along a ridgetop to a magnificent panorama overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Designed with environmentally sustainable materials, this house blends seamlessly into the surrounding environment.

        Under Construction

New projects are exciting. We are fortunate enough to have a variety of exciting projects in the design stage. From mountain-top retreats to earth-bermed studios and city apartments, each new client brings the challenge of interpreting varied programs and combining their needs with unique sites.

        Weiss Coastlands

Perched on the edge of the Pacific, this high-tech / low-impact home will feature elements of massive stone contrasting with the lightness and transparency of aluminum and glass. The front lawn rolls out over the underground guest house.

        Foster Residence

The contemporary design of this family retreat will marry the ancient Indian principles of Vastu Shastra to this spectacular West coast setting with the best of Big Sur: panoramic ocean views, groves of oaks and redwoods, and rolling meadows.

        The Duxbury Barn

The Duxbury barn is under construction with the 19th century timber frame in place along with the exterior wall framing. The roof framing is being completed with the interior floor and wall framing to follow. The barn will be clad with a combination of corrugated metal siding, and translucent wall panels to show off the unique structural system.

        Residential Compound

We are just about half way through the complete rehabilitation of this wonderful 1930's mansion in Texas.
